History of Coimbatore

  • Before the 2nd Century AD, Coimbatore was known as the capital of a small tribal.
  • Coimbatore was a part of the ancient Kongu country, and the Kosar people lived in this district with a place called Kosambuttur as their headquarters. The place where they lived, Koshambuttur, was later called Coimbatore.
  • From the 2nd century to the 3rd century AD, Kingdom Kongunad (Coimbatore) was ruled by the great warrior Karikala Cholan.
  • This district was ruled by the empires of Rashtrakudas, Chalukyas, Pandyas, Hoysals, Vijayanagara Empire and British.
  • In 1888, the first textile mill was constructed in Coimbatore. Now, there are more than 100 mills in Coimbatore.

Perur Sivan Temple - Pattiswarar
Perur Sivan Temple is about 8 km from Gandhipuram Bus Stand at Coimbatore. The most ancient temple is called Melai Chidambaram. The sculptures here are mesmerizing and awe-inspiring. Panguni Uthra festival is celebrated here grantly. This temple has a history of more than 1500 years and was established by the Chola king. The main god of this Temple is Pattiswarar. The temple is open daily from 6 am to 8.30 pm in a beautiful environment where the Noyyal river flows.

Sri Ulagalandha Perumal Temple Singanallur
Singhanallur Ulagalandha Perumal Temple is one of the famous Vaishnava shrines in Tamil Nadu. This ancient and historical temple was built during the reign of the Pallava kings. Special prayers are held here every alternate Saturday and special festivals are held here in the months of Puratasi and Margazhi.

Arulmigu Koniamman Temple Coimbatore
Koniamman temple is considered the guardian deity of Coimbatore. Special prayers are held here on Fridays and Sundays. The annual chariot festival held here in the third week of Masi is very popular. Many devotees Visit here & participate not only from local but also from other places.

Ranganathaswamy Temple Karamadai
Karamadai Ranganatha temple is very ancient and beautiful situated on the way from Coimbatore to Mettupalayam. The special feature of this temple is the moolavar lingam here. This temple was established by the kings of Vijayanagara.

Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary and Anaimalai Tiger Reserve
At the Anaimalai Wildlife Sanctuary near Pollachi, you can find a variety of animals including leopards, tigers, and elephants. The sanctuary is spread over an area of about 1000 square kilometers. You can enjoy the forest and animals while sitting on an elephant. There is a separate fee for the elephant safari. The waterfalls, tea plantations, Amaravati Dam, etc. in this hilly area are eye-catching features.

Top Slip Pollachi
Top Slip is one of the most beautiful places in Anamalai Hills. Accommodation is available here. There is an elephant camp in the area. In these camps, you can see the taming, training, and habituation of newly captured wild elephants.

Amaravathi Crocodile Farm
A crocodile farm has been set up in the Amaravati dam area. Travelers going to Anaimalai can enjoy this beautiful area also.

Marudhamalai Subramanya Swamy Murugan Temple
When you say Marudamalai, the sweet song of music legend Madurai Somu comes to mind. "Maruthamalai Maamaniye" is a popular song sung by S Somasundaram aka Madurai Somu in the 1972 Tamil film Deivam. Madurai Somu made people know, who did not know about the special things of Marudamalai Murugan Temple. One of the famous hill stations of Murugan, it is located about 13 km from Coimbatore. This very ancient place is situated in a beautiful environment. The opening time of the shrine is 6 AM and closes at 8.30 PM.
