About Virudhunagar District and Its History
- Virudhunagar is the capital city of Virudhunagar district. This district is one of the main industrial sectors next to Coimbatore and Salem.
- It has the honor of being the birthplace of karmaveerar kamarajar and Kumaraswamy Raja. The Gopuram, featured in the symbol of Tamil Nadu Government, is located in the Srivilliputhur Andal Temple of this district. This is the biggest pride given to this district.
- Virudhunagar is one of the most important commercial cities of Tamil Nadu. The district has seen tremendous growth in industrial sectors such as cement, textile, food, oil, crackers, and weaving etc.

Virudhunagar was ruled by various kingdoms the Vijayanagar empire (1559), Chanda Sahib (1740 – 1754), Arcot Nawab, Muhammed Yusuf Khan (1725 - 1764). Like other TN districts, eventually, this district was ruled by British East India Company from 1801 to 1947.

Virudhunagar Famous Tourist Attractions & Places of Interest
Ramanasramam Tiruchuli
Ramanar was born at Ramanasramam, Tiruchuli. He grew up and studied in this area.
Later he went to Tiruvannamalai, lived here and died. This memorial ashram has been set
up to spread his fame and teachings.
Perunthalaivar Dr. K. Kamaraj Memorial
In Virudhunagar, the house where karmaveerar kamarajar was born has been built in his memory.
Even when he was the Chief Minister, his mother lived in this house. In his memory, many
iconic photographs, objects used by him, clothes, etc. have been preserved and displayed in this house.
Admission is free.
Pilavakkal Dam
This dam is located near Srivilliputhur at a distance of 56 km from Virudhunagar. The parks with
green lawns in the area are an eye catcher. It is noteworthy that boating facilities are provided
here which is the main tourist center of this district.
Srivilliputhur
The town is about 75 kilometers from Virudhunagar. Famous for weaving and Balkova, the Andal temple
tower stands majestically at a height of 192 feet with 12 tiers. It has the pride of being the
tallest tower in the South. Andal, an ardent devotee of Perumal, was born in this temple.
The 200-year-old Andal temple and its chariot are the highlights of Srivilliputhur. Celebrated
in the months of Puratasi and Panguni, the Brahmotsavam, Aadi Perukku, Panguni Uthiram, Karthika Deepam etc.
The Chariot Festival held at chitrai month is very famous.
Srivilliputhur Grizzled Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary
A variety of wildlife including flying squirrels, fallow deer, tigers, leopards and bears can be
found at shenbagathoppu Wildlife Bird Sanctuary in Srivilliputhur area. The sanctuary is spread
over an area of about 500 square kilometers. There are many species of birds here.
Apart from monsoons and summers, you can visit the sanctuary during the mid-season. The Forest
Department has established facilities for the same.
Ayyanar Falls
Ayyanar Falls is located about 15 kilometers from Virudhunagar. Surrounded by beautiful natural
forest environment, this place is wonderful to visit and enjoy. There is also an Ayyanar temple
near this waterfall.
Pallimadam
The Pallimadam is located along the banks of kundatrangarai near tiruchuli. There is an kalayadha
Sami temple built by the Pandya kings about 1000 years ago.
Thirumeninathar Temple
A little away from Srivilliputhur is the Thirumeni Nathar Temple. This Siva temple is ancient and
built by the Pandya kings.
Arulmigu Bhoominathar Temple
This is the proud Siva Temple sung by Sekkizhar and Sundaramurthy Nayanar. This temple was built
during the Pandya kings. About 1 hour drive from Virudhunagar to reach this temple.
Irukkankudi
There is a famous Mariamman temple at Irukkankudi near Sattur. Here Panguni Uthiram festival takes
place very well. This is one of the famous places in this district.
