Madurai Famous Tourist Attractions & Places of Interest
Meenakshi Amman Temple
Arulmigu Meenakshi Sundaraswarar Temple, which stands at the peak of Madurai city, was built by King Kulasekhara Pandya.
The beautiful Raja Gopuram and Potramarai Kulam are the highlights of this temple. The temple is located near the Madurai
city bus stand.
Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace
Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal is situated a little away from Madurai Meenakshi temple. This temple has a very fine architecture,
built around 370 years ago. Visitors are allowed from 9am to 5pm. Here the history of Thirumalai Nayakkar is shown in A/V daily.
Gandhi Museum
The Rani Mangammal Palace was renovated and a memorial to Gandhi was erected there. In another part of the premises, the
Government Museum was established in 1981. Various art objects, sculptures, documents etc. are protected in this museum.

Rajaji Park
Rajaji Park is located near Madurai Corporation Office. The park is beautifully designed with features that both children
and adults can enjoy. You can enter from 10 am to 8 pm.
Vandiyur Mariamman Temple
Vandiyur Mariamman Temple is about 6 km from Madurai City Bus Stand. This is one of the famous temples in Madurai.
The biggest Theppakulam is here in this temple. Special festivals are held here in Aadi and Avani months.
Madurai Ayyanar Kochadai Temple
We can Reach Kochadai Ayyanar Temple from Periyar Suburban Bus Stand. A large number of devotees from Madurai and
surrounding areas come and go here daily.
Subramaniya Swamy Temple Thiruparankundram
It is considered to be the first of Murugan's famous six temples. The temple, which has very beautiful sculptures, is
about 10 kilometers from Madurai.
Arulmigu Kallalagar Temple, Azhagar Kovil
The Kallazhagar temple is situated on the Alaghar Hill, about 21 kilometers from Madurai. The main god here also has the
name Sundararaja Perumal. This temple is ancient and is located in a beautiful hilly environment. It is considered similar
to Tirupati Balaji Temple. Kallaghagar descends on Vaigai river is a famous festival celebrated every year in Madurai.
Pazhamudhircholai Murugan Temple
Palamudhir Solai, a temple of Lord Murugan situated on Alaghar Hill, is one of the most special of the Arupadai Veedugal.
It is noteworthy that the Vaishnava temple and Shiva temple are located at the same place. This place also has the other
name, Tirumaliruncholai.
Shri Koodal Azhagar Temple
In ancient literature and Puranas, Madurai is mentioned as Kudal Nagar and Naan mada koodal. Based on that, this famous
Vaishnava site got its name as Koodal Azhagar Temple. Praised by Periyalvar songs, this place is ancient and beautiful, built
during the Pandya period. The main god here appears in three stages.
Kalayarkoil Sivan Temple
Kalaiyar Temple is located 60 kilometers from Madurai. The most ancient and famous shiva temple was built during the Pandya
period. The Rajagopuram of this temple, full of beautiful sculptures, has been erected with great beauty.
Thiruvathavur
Thiruvathavur Temple, about 28 kilometers from Madurai, is one of the famous temples in the district. Here the Moolavar Thirumarainathar
is displayed with aaravalli. This place is near from Madurai Otthakadai. This town has the honor of being the birth place of Maanikkavaasagar.
Thirumohoor Kalamegaperumal Temple
Thirumohoor is a short distance away from Otthakadai. A famous Perumal temple is located in Thirumohoor. Moolavar Sudarshan is seen
with Shenbagavalli Thayar. This temple is about 21 kilometers from Madurai.
Kutladampatti Water Falls Vadipatti
Kutladampatti Water Falls is one of the tourist centers in the district, situated in the Sirumalai region, about 38 kilometers from Madurai,
on the way to Kodaikanal. Visitors can enjoy bathing in this stream located in a very beautiful forest environment. The park near this
waterfalls is also very beautiful. There is a very ancient Amman temple near the waterfall.
Athisayam Theme Park
The Athisayam Amusement Park is located about 16 kilometers from Madurai. It is full of artificial waterfalls and various recreational facilities.
Athisayam is a beautiful place to be enjoyed by children and adults alike. Entry Fee, Adult: Rs.200, Kids: Rs.150. This fee is charged along
with the various games in the park.
